Project Spotlight: Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston

Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston

Work Begins on Innovative Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston by Studio RED Architects

Over the last decade, Studio RED has demonstrated expertise in the field of arts facility design, and their most project is no exception. Partnering with project lead Lake|Flato, the Studio RED team has developed a design for the new Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston (MATCH). Set to break ground shortly, MATCH is a 46,000-square-foot, multi-tenant exhibition space that includes rehearsal halls, black box spaces, galleries, office spaces, and a theater that can accommodate audiences of up to 350 people.

Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston is an endeavor in both cultural arts facility design and urban planning, and involved the MATCH board, potential tenants, neighbors, and many Midtown and Houston policy and planning groups. Ultimately, the design was centered around the idea of transit-oriented development since the arts facility will be located just steps from the Ensemble/HCC METRO station. “This project is a unique opportunity to blend the creative vigor of the arts community with progressive design aspirations aimed at livable sustainability,” says Pete Ed Garrett, Partner at Studio RED. “We think this facility, Houston’s first true transit-oriented development, will be an anchor for future development in Midtown and an inspiration for the city as a whole.”

Studio RED Architects anticipates completion of Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston in spring 2015.
